Comfy House Shoes: Beyond Crocs and athletic slides for Active Dads
For years, I’ve sported the standard Nike slide with socks around the house. It's been my go-to for keeping my feet off the cold floor and avoiding dog hair or the dreaded wet sock from the dog's water bowls. The standard Nike slide has generally served me well. However, now that I’m a dad to a high-energy three-year-old toddler, I’ve realized these slides might not be up to the task for much longer.
With a toddler, spontaneous adventures are a regular thing. We might head to the backyard to play right after it's rained, navigating muddy terrain, or take a walk with some snow still melting from the last cold front, a chill lingering in the air. According to my toddler, these adventures can't wait for something as trivial as putting on actual shoes. As we brave the elements and weather conditions, I’ve discovered that slides aren’t built for every spontaneous escapade. Here are a few products that offer the rugged durability you might need on your next adventure, while still featuring the quick accessibility of a slide and being a notch above your standard Croc in terms of fashion.
The Teva ReEmber Terrain Slip-on offers a blend of comfort and rugged durability. I stumbled upon these on Instagram one day and knew immediately they were the solution to my spontaneous adventures. They remind me of a Birkenstock clog, which I can’t quite commit to because I know they’d get dirty in no time. But these offer water-resistant and easier-to-clean materials, better suited for an outdoor lifestyle while still doubling as a comfy lounge shoe.
Also, check out the Chaco’s Rambler Puff Clog. I appreciate that these have an adjustable strap for a more secure fit. You definitely don’t want to slip out of these when your toddler speeds off too fast on his 'cycle bike' (that’s what we call his balance bike). While I don’t find these as stylish, they're still a great option and more budget-friendly.
